Welcome to Lady of Mercy
Prayer Shawl Ministry
“Shawls…made for centuries universal and embracing,
symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving, God.
They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace,
mother, hug, shelter and beautify.
Those who have received these shawls have been
uplifted and affirmed, as if given wings to
fly above their troubles…”
By: Janet Bristow, co-founder of Prayer Shawl Ministry
The “Share a Yarn” group at St. Brigid’s Parish has broadened it’s mission to include the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Our members knit or crochet “prayer shawls” that are then given to the ill, recently widowed, or others in need in our parish. Prayer shawls receive their name because, as you knit or crochet, you are asked to weave prayers into your shawl as you work. Your prayers may include prayers of hope, strength, quality of life, peace, or a general prayer of God’s love. Your prayers will be woven into the stitches of your shawl and when your shawl is presented, the recipient is reminded of the prayer community from which it came.
How can I become part of the
Prayer Shawl Ministry?
Come to our “Share a Yarn” meetings and knit or crochet with others. We meet the 3rd Monday of every month (except July and August) at 7:00 pm at St. Brigid’s in Bergen. Patterns for the shawls will be available with people there willing to help you get started. You will want to bring 3 skeins of Lion Brand’s Homespun yarn and size 11 or 13 knitting needles or size N-13 crochet hook. You are also welcome to check out our donated yarn supply.
Knit along with us at home. Pick up a copy of the prayer shawl pattern which will be placed in the back of the church. Knit or crochet at your leisure. We are always donating shawls to others, so there is no deadline.
